BUSNA to Take Part in Giving Tuesday 2020
On December 1st BUSNA will join the millions of people and organizations taking part in the day of giving known as Giving Tuesday! This global movement hopes to make an impact on all communities in need, and hopefully also boost BUSNA’s efforts to support Birdshot Uveitis research and patient education.
Birdshot Uveitis is a rare non-infectious autoimmune disease that affects the eyes. Left untreated, it can lead to blindness. Fewer than 1 in 200,000 people are affected, and Caucasian women over the age of 40 are its largest demographic. Researchers have recently learned that more than 99% of those with the disease share a genetic marker, HLA A-29. There is currently no cure.

Giving Tuesday started in 2012 as a joint project of the 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation. What began simply as a reminder to do goodhas since become a “global generosity movement”. Last year’s estimated $1.97 billion in contributions to hundreds of charities included over $500 million in online donations.
Always occurring the first Tuesday after the U.S. Thanksgiving, Giving Tuesday follows the major shopping days, Black Friday and Cyber Monday. It’s meant to inspire generosity for others during a season in which we’re often focused on gifting our own families. This year, on May 5th, an additional Giving Tuesday was initiated in response to the economic hardship brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic.
As part of 2020’s kindness campaign, people everywhere are especially encouraged to perform small acts of kindness in the month leading up to Giving Tuesday. “Every act of generosity counts and everyone has something to give.” By celebrating our generous spirit we help make the world a better place!
